Pay It Forward

A really cool thing about the YES Abroad Program (at least in Sarajevo, and I would assume elsewhere) is that participants have a quota for volunteering hours.  So far we’ve cooked zucchini for a Bajram meal at a senior center and and today we scoured a smaller rock-climbing gym.  The four of us went to a youth center in my neighborhood.  It was surprisingly fun, and it felt good to use my muscles when we were scrubbing the walls to a pearly white.  There were several intimidating spiders who lurked in the corners, and at one point Helena was impressed by how much dust can fit into a vacuum bag.  However, for the most part it was a rewarding afternoon, and it feels nice to give back a little something to the community that is supporting me for the year.
